City of Schenectady Fence Codes

Are you looking to have a fence installed and live in the city of Schenectady? If so, here are the requirements:

  1. STANDARDS
  • Fences erected or constructed on the side yard between residential buildings can be no more the 6′ high
  • Fences in front yards can be no more the 4′ high
  • Fences on the street side-yard of corner lots, behind the front building line can not be no more the 4’high unless placed more than 4 feet from the side yard sidewalk then it can not be no more then 6’high
  • All ornamental fences can not be no more then 5′ high
  • Fences on the street line of rear yards can be no more then 4’high unless placed more than 4 feet from sidewalk or street line then it can not be no more then 6’high
  • All other rear yards can be no more then 6’high
  • On any lot within 4 feet of any intersection of any driveway with a City right-of-way or ingress/egress right-of-way can not be no more then 4’high
  • All other fences, unless provided for elsewhere within this chapter can not be no more then 6’high.

2. CORNER LOTS

  • Fences located on corner lots shall meet the requirements of 264-34, Obstruction to vision at corner lots

3. Materials and Construction

  • Barbed wire, chicken wire, pallets, plywood, sheet metal, and construction fencing shall not be used as a fencing material or as any part of a fence

4. Orientation

  • The finished or ornamental side shall face out from the property.

    How many feet can a fence be erected in a side yard from the neighbors property line. or can it be installed on the property line?

      Your fence must be a minimum of 3″ from your property line however, each town/city or village may vary. If you have any other questions give the office a call at 356-2170 and the girls will be happy to help!
